Alpaca Vocabulary

 

·       Alpacas – general for all alpacas- dam, female, hembra, cria, gelding, non-breeder, stud, macho

·       birthing – the term when a female alpaca gives birth to a kid

·       Cria – a baby alpaca

·       Culled – term used when a alpaca has been sold to be a non-breeder

·       Dry alpaca – a alpaca who is not producing milk

·       Dry period – the time during which the alpaca does not

·       Gelding – a non-breeding male

·       Gestating – the time the dam is carrying her cria inside

·       Hembra – dam, female, adult female alpaca

·       Lactating – a period of time when the alpaca is producing milk.

·       Macho – adult male alpaca serving as a stud

· Stud – Male adult breeding male
